Good News If You've Recently Binged on Food
With all that's going on in the world these days, you'd be forgiven for pigging out on some comfort food -- and according to a new study from the University of Bath, your body will forgive you, too.
The study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, young men between the ages of 22-37 were able to eat as much as two-and-a-half large pizza pies in one sitting, with no long-term ill effects.
The average calorie count for such a pizza party would be around 3,000, the experts say, but the gastronomic feat -- or, for that matter, testing the limits of an "all you can eat" buffet -- had little impact on the subjects.
"Our findings show that the body actually copes remarkably well when faced with a massive and sudden calorie excess. Healthy humans can eat twice as much as 'full' and deal effectively with this huge initial energy surplus," said lead researcher Aaron Hengist says in a university release.
Professor James Betts explains, "Those tested in this study were able to efficiently use or store the nutrients they ingested during the pizza-eating challenge, such that the levels of sugar and fats in their blood were not much higher than when they ate half as much food."
That being said, don't make gluttony an everyday thing, Hengist warns: "We all know the long-term risks of over-indulgence with food when it comes to obesity, type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease."
Betts adds, "...[T]his study shows that if an otherwise healthy person overindulges occasionally, for example eating a large buffet meal or Christmas lunch, then there are no immediate negative consequences in terms of losing metabolic control."
